An average healthy day or How I becaming a healthier person
76My Average Healthy Day
Daybreak
It is 4:30am my radio alarm goes off and the early morning show on Jacaranda FM, a local music radio show starts playing its latest tune - "no repeats from 7am to 7pm" is their slogan.. Five minutes later my Cell Phone / PDA starts bonging at me. This device is strategically placed walking distance from my bed. I have to rise to still the irritating computer generated tone.
As I am up anyway I slouch off to the bathroom to do my daily wake up pee. Trying not to make too much noise as beloved is still pretending to sleep. As I return to bed for my 30 minute 'chillout' to full wakefulness, she murmurs "softer please" meaning the radio not me! I oblige.
At 5am I open the blinds of our bedroom and peer out into the darkness. It is winter now but in summer the sun would be rising and the birds in our tiny townhouse garden would be twittering and leaping about beginning their day.
I go downstairs to our kitchen and make a pot of filter coffee, a pot of tea for later and Micro wave 240grams of Oats. The prescribed daily dose for our fibre rich, low GI breakfast.
Vitamins
I also take my various vitamin supplements. These are Imsyser (a form of Barleygreen), Moducare (an extract of wild potato) and MSM. I then prepare our bagged lunches. This normally consists of last nights left over supper, three fruits (normally an apple, a banana and a citrus (or a seasonal fruit or berry) a pecan and banana muffin and a small low fat yogurt.
Coffee is now taken upstairs and beloved is officially woken up with coffee (for her low fat milk and sweetener - no sugar.). My coffee is taken black.
We then discuss our day ahead.Finish our coffee. She Showers etc and I put on Gym outfit or swimming costume plus tracksuit depending on the day. Alternate days for me are swim days, while the other 3 are workout days..
I take out cars out of the garage and we breakfast together (oats with fat free yoghurt) unless either of us has an early appointment or breakfast meeting ( when the oats preparation does not take place). We arrange for our domestic for the evening meal unless we are planning to eat out.
I go to Gym , she goes to work.
The Workout
I do my workout . If swimming, I do 50 laps, various strokes ending with alternating butterfly and breaststroke. If it s my workout day, i do 20 minutes treadmill at heart rate, followed by many stomach exercises, 60 press-ups, 5 minutes steps, 10 minutes cycling and cooling off with 5 minutes on rowing machine,I shower, check heart rate and blood pressure and brave the traffic to the office. I take between 20 minutes and 1.5 hours to travel the 16km to the Office depending the level of traffic chaos. See my hub "traffic in Johannesburg" for a detailed view of this aspect of my life.
And so to work
I switch the car radio over to 702 a talk station "news and views" 24 X 7.
Listen to the days news, traffic reports, and various phone in discussions.
The news is the usual assortment, last nights crime, latest corruption scandal, Load shedding round up (see my Load shedding hub). The sport round up ( in summer we are all cricket fans and in winter it is Rugby) See my hub Hub South Ouch for more on the news issues in RSA)
I finally arrive at the office handle my mail and prepare for, and attend my various meetings.
Most days I eat the bagged lunch without taking break. some days I have lunch appointments, mostly at my club.
If I have no evening functions, I brave the traffic, stop at a coffee shop to wait out the traffic and finally proceed home..
Dinner
I generally finish off the prepared meal which is normally Spaghetti Bolognese, chicken curry or stir fry depending on the day. Some days I prepare and grill whole chicken breasts. we generally have 3 vegetables (Rice, Pasta or sweet potato make up the starch component).the veggies are normally whatever is fresh in the market, zucchini (we call them baby marrows), beans and butternut with spinach, broccoli ) We rarely eat steak but sometimes eat grilled fish.
If we are eating out we will have sushi.,steak or grilled fish with veg or salads. The meat is usually 200gm or the size and thickness of your hand. White meat or fish are the size and thicknesss of your entire hand.
Close of Day
I now chill out watching TV soaps, sitcoms (I love Smallville, Grays Anatomy or Crossing Jordan), Discovery or National Geographic. Once dearly beloved arrives (she has a pressure job in an IT company) we eat, work at mails (or hub pages) read a novel (at least one a week for me).
And so to bed,
It is 4:30am my radio alarm goes off and .....

- HubMob Weekly Topic: Fitness, diets, staying in shape and losing weight: Tips for becoming a healthier person
That is a lot. I think it is best to take it in small steps. One tip for losing weight is not to think that you are sacrificing but that you are choosing and maybe the choice today is not to eat that double hot chocolate sundae but that it does remain a choice. I hope that makes sense. I find that games are better than exercise for me. So, I play tennis rather than ride an exercise cycle or something like that. I find when I do those things I get bored and think I could be doing such and such but when I play tennis I have to concentrate on the ball. - 3 years ago

Fruit juices are strong body cleansers, specially citrus fruits. Fruit and vegetable juices are ideal for detoxifying your system, if taken to replace a meal they give your body a much needed rest while still providing nutrients and energy from their natural sugars. - 2 years ago

Golly, you sound as fit as my StepDad, who does 100 press ups every morning, then swims at the local beach every afternoon (in Summer), plus maintaining his huge garden, helping us at our lake and cycling on the regular basis. He is 74 now, but far fitter than my 41 year old Husband, sounds like you are too! Keep it up and you will outlive all of us :)
wow, I could never be this devoted to being healthy. Keep up the good work!
I forgot to add my favorite quote This should help you understand what I think about being healthy
I can resist anything but temptaion.
My goodness, I need to get on the treadmill; after reading your hub, I feel like a couch potatoe. Looks like you have developed a pattern, so your mind has also been conditioned to exercise without pausing to think, should I exercise today or not? Seriously, you inspired me and I may not be as disciplined as you are, but I am getting on that treadmill I purchased a few months ago, several time a week from now on!
Thumbs up!
Wow...you sure know how to make a person hungry!! :) I'm coming over for dinner some night...it all sounds delicious!
Good hub there, keep you in sahape for your travels.
good one...i do my dailey exercise too. 35 -40 inutes each day...rain or shine.G-ma :o) hugs
Excellent hub. Thanks for reinforcing the importance of a positive routine. It's also helpful to maintain that balance between mind, body, and spirit. Feel free to see how I try to help others in new ways too. Sincerely: Gary Eby, author and therapist.
Sixty, you're a legend! Just thinking about that amount of exercise makes me want to go and lay down!
Very interesting!! We all have so much in common, no matter where we live, we try to stay healthy, ( you exercise so much it puts me to shame!! ) we eat, we work, we play, we vegg out, we read -- what are your interests as far as books go?
It sounds like you have got into a very good routine. We try - Pat walks, Tricia teaches (and is taught) Pilates. However, we both spend far too much time using our computers. On the plus side, we don't use much time driving. Thanks for sharing this.
Interesting hub. 4:30am ?!!! Yikes.
I am glad you were able to get on the healthy track. By the way, I love how British English refers to swimming suits as swimming costumes, I always liked that. Thanks for the interesting hub.
You need to be fit, that is a long day.
I like your diet as it is not over the fence so to speak, and involves actual food.
Keeping a healty body is very important. We all need to be resonsible enough to our health!
She doesn't exercise with you, I take it?
Love Patricia Cornwell, but you know...I got tired of her writing style when she switched to present tense. ..."She grabs the vase and hits the glass window and says to her niece..." My brain is changing all of it to grabbed, hit, said -- as I read and it's tiresome. I loved her characters, but her first many books were written in the past tense, a much easier version for most readers, certainly me.
Evidently she could care less what I think; as she continues to do it. LOL probly cries all the way to the bank over losing me as reader....hahaha
I also read James Patterson, John Grisham, Dean Koontz, and Janet Evanovich -- she is very funny, your wife would probably really enjoy her.
I think you're right, sometimes the author forgets to write for her audience. She/he should stay in tuned with what we can accept in the storyline. I was upset with Dean Koontz and wrote to him...took a month but I got a reply. In his Odd Thomas Series....he killed every one we got attached to in the 2nd book. I was furious. In the 3rd one, there was no one to attach to..they were all monks and did not lend much to the storyline. His girlfriend "appeared" to him finally, but it was too late to make you feel any better. So, after doing such a good job of creating the characters for the series, he kills them off in the 2nd book (kills off the girlfriend of Odd Thomas in the first book), gives you no one to attach to in the 3rd, I had had it by then. I told him to bring back the girlfriend or give Odd Thomas the power to go beyond the grave at will...because the series was dull without characters to like.
I told him he had forgotten his readers. I probably sounded like the goofy Number 1 fan in Misery...He promised me he'd do a good book. I have not bought the Odd Hours yet....we'll see. LOL Like he really cares what I think ha
But, I write to everybody like I matter....I did get a personal reply from Bill Clinton when he was president and I do treasure it. For 5 min the Pres of the US knew my name. It was during the monica scandal and I asked him NOT to resign,...I didn't care who he had sex with...I said make up with your family and get back to running the country, we need you.
I picture his aid running down the hall and saying "I found one Mr President - I found one!!" meaning one positive letter. LOL
Anyway, it's framed and on the wall...my mother had letters from Barry Goldwater and J Edgar Hoover, and talked with John F Kennedy in a conference....but I'm the only one with a letter from the Pres. my claim to fame.
Maybe I should write to Cornwell and ask her to go back to writing past tense -- I never buy a book written in present tense, they're just too hard to follow - my brain keeps changing the verbs. I wonder why that is? Many do it tho...so there is something to it. I find myself even writing in present tense when I tell a story and I make myself change it because readers aren't comfortable for the most part when they read it.
well, i've taken up too much of your space here....enjoy the books!
Great hub, Sixty. You're a smart man. Keep it up!
Thanks for sharing how you became a healthier person. I loved the read and you sound very healthy in body mind and spirit!! You've got a new fan! Thumbs up.
Another nice peek into your life, sixtyorso.
If I may offer you a suggestion? You refer to a number of you other hubs. Perhaps it would be convenient to collect them into a Links-capsule and place that alongside of your text *smile*
You're welcome. It's quite easy. When in edit-mode, add a Links-capsule (top right, Add More Stuff, Links). When you edit that capsule, you enter the links to the hubs you want to add, click "Test link", which will add both the title and the summary of the hub and then click "Add". You do this for each hub you want to include, save the capsule and you're done :)
There's no hurry, sixtyorso. Enjoy your cruise!
Hi Clive, when you return, (would that I were on a cruise, I'm so jealous!!) I'd be interested in your take on my hub "I found the Secret to Losing Weight" -- it's really about success in business during hard times, and I'd like to know your opinion about it.
In the meantime, DON'T HAVE ANY FUN!! =0)
thanks for sharing about your routine. impressive.
